tips to make your stay in antibes more enjoyable
It is very easy to vacation in the South of France having little or no understanding of the language. Antibes has a large yachting crew community, many of whom hail from Australia and England, which explains many of the English speaking pubs. Your experience, however, will certainly be made easier and more enjoyable if you can speak a few words simply out of courtesy for the country you are visiting. We’ve listed a few to get you started.

  • Bonjour (bon zhoor) - Hello, good morning or good day (used before 5 - 6pm)
  • Bonsoir (bonswa)- Hello, good evening (replaces bonjour after 5 - 6pm for the rest of the night)
  • Au Revoir (or-e-vwa) - Good bye
  • Merci beaucoup (mersee bowcoo) - Thank you
  • Oui (wee) - Yes
  • Non (no) - no

Fitting In
Use “please” and “thank you” all the time. French is a very polite language and it is part of speaking to add these simply phrases to each and every request. It is also part of the culture to say “hello”when entering a shop or going to the check-out stand. You will find that it is also polite and much appreciated to say “thank you, goodbye”.There are a number of free language resources on the internet and small phrase books that can assist in getting just a few words and phrases to help you get around more easily, but the biggest key is just to jump in there and try.
